We’re Hiring: Summer 2026 Law Clerk (Remote or Richmond, VA)
Cultural Heritage Partners (CHP) invites law students to apply for a Summer 2026 Law Clerk role supporting our Indigenous and Preservation Practice areas. We are hiring to fill two positions. The clerks will provide support to attorneys working on high-impact matters at the intersection of Tribal sovereignty, cultural heritage, and environmental law.
What you’ll work on (cutting-edge & current)
- Assist with NHPA Section 106 consultation strategy and documentation for federal undertakings that may affect historic properties or sacred sites.
- Monitor and synthesize Executive Orders and White House/OMB memoranda that shape federal consultation and policy.
- Track and draft recommendations regarding NEPA and NHPA regulations.
- Draft or update Tribal codes and ordinances (e.g., governance, justice, environmental and cultural-resource protections), using authoritative resources and best-practice frameworks.
Day-to-day responsibilities
- Research and draft memos, comment letters, pleadings, and client communications on federal, Tribal, and state issues.
- Track Executive Orders, rules, guidance, and court developments impacting Indian Country, cultural heritage law, and environmental law, and subsequently brief attorneys.
- Prepare Section 106 and NEPA materials (consultation records, scoping/impact analysis support, timelines, and checklists).
- Collaborate closely with attorneys in a focused, mission-driven team.
Who you are
- Excellent research, writing, and communication skills; strong academic performance.
- Demonstrated interest in American Indian law, cultural heritage, and/or environmental & museum law; experience working with underrepresented communities.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently (remotely) and in a small team.
Term, location & compensation
- Full-time, 10 weeks during Summer 2026.
- Remote or Richmond, Virginia (preference for candidates in DC, Virginia, Maryland, New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas who can attend occasional in-person meetings).
- Compensation: Available as a paid clerkship or a for-credit externship (subject to law school policies).
