We’re Hiring: Cultural Resources Reviewer

We are seeking a part-time Cultural Resources Reviewer to support the Preservation Practice team, which focuses on matters involving historic preservation and environmental laws on the federal, state, and local levels. This position will focus on supporting our clients in the Mid-Atlantic region. The position can be remote or based in our Richmond, Virginia office, and proximity to the Richmond office and the ability to attend periodic meetings there (once you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19) is a plus. This position is 15-20 hours/week and reports to our Cultural Resource Specialist, Ellen Chapman.

Successful candidates should have some experience working in cultural resource management and/or cultural resources review and be familiar with the methods and products of cultural resources management. Enrollment in or completion of a graduate program in Archaeology, Anthropology, Architectural History, History, or a related field and experience in the Mid-Atlantic region are preferred. Primary responsibilities:

  • Review cultural resources reports, agency communications, and agency conclusions and assess and summarize them for the CHP team and our clients
  • Research and write memos on cultural resources topics to support firm representations
  • Research local, state, and federal government regulations and engagement processes for client matters and policy advocacy
  • Work with an interdisciplinary team to characterize cultural resources issues in legal and regulatory filings
  • Participate in client meetings as required
  • Attend online and in-person meetings (generally in the Mid-Atlantic region) as needed
  • Draft communications and responses to project updates for team members and clients
  • Assist with strategy and planning on cultural resource matters
  • Engage in collaborative work with team members, including editing documents and providing other feedback
  • Brainstorm and draft blog posts on cultural resources and historic preservation topics
  • Attend webinars and trainings on relevant topics

 Qualifications:

  • Ability to assess the thoroughness and accuracy of archaeological and/or architectural cultural resources compliance
  • Familiarity with archaeological approaches associated with Phase I, II, and III investigations conducted to comply with federal law
  • Ability and willingness to research topics and regions that you may not be deeply versed in
  • Detail oriented
  • Professional and friendly demeanor
  • Honest, dependable, and able to safeguard sensitive information
  • Strong writer
  • Highly resourceful team-player
  • Able to adapt to change and comfortable with a task list that may fluctuate on a given day
  • Proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Dropbox, Adobe Acrobat, Google Apps, and social media
  • Willing to learn new technology platforms used for team management and invoices (Basecamp, Clio, WordPress, etc.) as needed

What we have to offer:

This is a part-time role, and responsibilities can be scheduled around other obligations. Remote work is easily accommodated. The hourly rate is $18-23/hour depending on experience and whether the applicant meets Secretary of Interior qualifications. Part-time employees are eligible to participate in our 401(k) retirement plan with employer match and will receive paid time off and federal holidays proportional to hours worked.
