We are hiring a part-time Cultural Resources Fellow from January 15, 2025 to June 10, 2025 to support the Indigenous and Preservation Practice teams, which focus on matters involving historic preservation and environmental laws on the federal, state, and local levels as well as cultural resources priorities for tribal and First Nations communities. The position can be remote or based in our Richmond, Virginia office. Residency in Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, or DC, as well as proximity to the Richmond office and the ability to attend periodic meetings there, are preferred. We anticipate the job will have predictable volumes of work and seek someone able to work 15-20 hours per week regularly.
Successful candidates will have some experience working in cultural resource management and/or cultural resources review and be familiar with the methods and products of cultural resources management. Enrollment in or completion of a graduate program in Archaeology, Anthropology, Architectural History, History, or a related field and experience in the Mid-Atlantic region is preferred. Primary responsibilities:
- Review cultural resources reports, agency communications, and agency conclusions and assess and summarize them for the CHP team and clients
- Manage intake of tribal consultation invitations and keep firm project status tracker updated
- Research and write memos on cultural resources topics to support firm representations
- Research local, state, and federal government regulations and engagement processes for client matters and policy advocacy
- Work with an interdisciplinary team to characterize cultural resources issues in legal and regulatory filings
- Attend online and in-person meetings (generally in the Mid-Atlantic region) as needed
- Draft communications and responses to project updates for team members and clients
- Engage in collaborative work with team members, including editing documents and providing other feedback
Qualifications:
- Ability to assess the thoroughness and accuracy of archaeological and/or architectural cultural resources compliance
- Familiarity with archaeological approaches associated with Phase I, II, and III investigations conducted to comply with federal law
- Ability and willingness to research topics and regions that you may not be deeply versed in

This is a part-time role, and responsibilities can usually be scheduled around other schooling, employment, or childcare obligations. The hourly rate is $21-25/hour depending on experience and whether the applicant meets Secretary of Interior qualifications. Part-time employees will receive paid time off and federal holidays proportional to hours worked.
