We’re Hiring: Associate Attorney

Cultural Heritage Partners, PLLC, a mission-driven law firm, seeks an experienced associate attorney to join our Indigenous law practice. The Firm currently serves as general counsel to several federally recognized Indian tribes and their business enterprises, and as outside counsel for cultural resources to several Indian Tribal Nation(s)/Canadian First Nation(s).

The selected Associate Attorney will support this diverse Indigenous law practice, which includes: providing advice on governance and tribal government systems; drafting and reviewing tribal laws, resolutions, and contracts; and advising on business and enterprise development strategy, real estate transactions, tax policy, and land into trust applications.

The selected Associate Attorney will also advise on the application of federal Indian laws, such as, but not limited to, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Protection Act (ICPFVP), the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determination Act (NAHASDA), Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act (ISDEAA), the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA), the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), and the American Indian Religious Freedom Act (AIRFA), and will provide support to federal and state policy advocacy efforts.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school with excellent academic credentials
  • At least 3-5 years of work experience in the field of federal Indian law
  • Experience as counsel to one or more Indian tribal nations
  • Strong research, writing, and communications skills
  • Familiarity with tribal enterprises and business development strategies
  • Interest in tribal governance and policy and advocacy strategy
  • Ability to work well independently and in small teams
  • Experience litigating in tribal, IBIA or CFR courts

 

Applicants should be licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia or be willing/eligible to waive in. This is a full-time position that can be fully remote, based in our Richmond, Virginia office, or a combination of both.

Compensation is competitive and depends on level of experience and whether the Associate Attorney has a portable book of business. Base salary for this position is at least $130,000.
