Our conversation with Andrew will focus on his discoveries about the Lost Colony of Roanoke, a predecessor to Jamestown and an enduring historical mystery. We will discuss the legacy of the Lost Colony myth and what it tells us about contemporary debates in American heritage and the development of ideas about race in the 19th century. In his career as a journalist, Andrew has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, National Geographic, and Smithsonian, among many other outlets, and he has won numerous awards for his reporting, including the Gene S. Stuart Award from the Society for American Archaeology. Currently, he is a contributing writer for Science and a contributing editor for Archaeology. He is also the author of Why Did the Chicken Cross the World?: The Epic Saga of the Bird that Powers Civilization.
Andrew has written recently about monument removal in Virginia and across America. His widely read article for POLITICO details Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney’s removal of Confederate monuments, and his piece for National Geographic explains that monument removal is not a new phenomenon.
